Farm to School and USDA Fruit and Vegetable Program
Farm to School is alive and well in NC through many active partnerships. The term Farm to School can mean many different things but at its core it includes these three elements:
- Teaching children about food and nutrition through hands on activities
- Growing healthy food with kids and communities in school gardens
- Connecting farms and schools through the purchase of more local foods
The PAN Branch helps support Farm to School in multiple ways through its partnerships and linkages with:
NC Farm to School Program - a program of the NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services that assists local child nutrition professionals purchase more NC fruits and vegetables through a farmers cooperative
FoodCorps - a new national program that places motivated young leaders in limited-resource communities for a year of public service to enhance Farm to School efforts. North Carolina is pleased to be hosting 6 of the 50 national Food Corp members
USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program - since 2004, the NC Department of Public Instruction Child Nutrition Program [linkto: http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/childnutrition/programs/] has been participating in this program, which provides free fruit and vegetable snacks to children in 170 elementary schools across NC.
