Karen Stanley serves as one of the three Community Development Specialists for the Physical Activity and Nutrition (PAN) Branch, N.C. Division of Public Health. In this position she works with state, local, and community organizations to promote policy and environmental level change interventions in support of healthy eating, physical activity, and tobacco-use prevention. She provides technical assistance and training to local health departments in the north-central and northeastern regions of the state. The 30 local health departments/districts that she serves are funded by the Statewide Health Promotion Program and are charged with implementing policy and environmental level interventions in their communities. Karen also serves as the PAN Branch Liaison for physical activity and nutrition coalitions statewide.
Karen has worked in the area of Health Promotion since 1997, first at the local level as a Health Promotion Nutritionist in Pitt County where she coordinated nutrition programs for Pitt County's employee wellness program. As a member of Pitt Partners for Health, the local Healthy Carolinians coalition, she was involved in a number of community initiatives which included implementing the NC Winner's Circle Healthy Dining Program in local restaurants and the farmer's market nutrition education program. She has worked in her current position as a state consultant since 2001.
Karen is a Registered Dietitian and holds a BS in Nutrition Science from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and completed her dietetic internship at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her two children, Hannah and Ben.
