Sharon Nelson serves as the Program Manager for the Statewide Health Promotion Program in the Physical and Nutrition (PAN) Branch, N.C. Division of Public Health. In this position she coordinates the administration of the program funding and the provision of technical assistance to local health departments for implementing policy and environmental changes supporting healthy eating, physical activity and tobacco use cessation. She is also the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant Coordinator for the Chronic Disease and Injury Section.
Prior to assuming her position with the PAN Branch, Sharon worked as a health educator for a nonprofit health education center where she coordinated special programs and workshops including health fairs targeting medically underserved women and children with asthma. Sharon also has experience as a Health Promotion Coordinator at a county health department. In this position, she coordinated the efforts of the Local Physical Activity and Nutrition Coalition. Sharon provided personal training services to clients in private health clubs in Wisconsin and Minnesota before pursuing her MPH degree in 1998.
Sharon holds a BS degree in Exercise Science and a MPH degree in Community Health Education. She is a member of the NC Public Health Associations, the Directors of Health Promotion and Education, and the American College of Sports Medicine. She is also a Registered Health Educator with the NC Board of Registry. Her hobbies and interests include running and outdoor activities.
