Stacy Shelp serves as a Communications Specialist for the Physical Activity and Nutrition Branch (PAN) of the NC Division of Public Health. Her role with the communications unit includes work on two federally funded ARRA Grants; one focused on Worksite Wellness and the other on Physical Activity and the Built Environment. Responsibilities include media advocacy, social media strategizing and implementation, social marketing campaign project management and campaign evaluation. Stacy also works with the team to provide mentoring and technical assistance to local communities as well as select CDC funded states.
Stacy has extensive background working for the public interest in a variety of capacities. As director of a mobile primary care health unit, she worked to advocate for and provide services to diverse populations across Colorado’s Front Range. Later, during her first tenure at North Carolina’s Division of Public Health, nine years ago, she served in social marketing and media specialist roles with North Carolina’s Cancer Control and Physical Activity & Nutrition branches. Prior to returning to the PAN branch in April of 2009, she was Assistant Director of Character Development Publishing and a Marketing Specialist with the educational non-profit, All Kinds of Minds.
As a volunteer, Stacy has used her experience to work in women’s issues. She has served as a Durham County Women’s Commissioner as well as on the board of directors of The Women’s Center in Chapel Hill. Other volunteer experience includes work in various non-profit organizations focusing on breast cancer detection and awareness, domestic violence and substance abuse prevention.
Stacy has a Bachelors degree in Human Development and Family Studies from Colorado State University. She enjoys living in Durham with her partner, Bonnie and daughter, Elley. Her time outside of work is spent doing what she loves: gardening, trying new recipes, hiking, kayaking, facilitating drum circles and cheering on the Duke women’s basketball team.
